The NRC Institute for Biodiagnostics (NRC-IBD) promotes socio-economic well-being, and acts as an industrial catalyst, through research and development in leading edge, instrumentally-based, medical diagnostic technologies. The Institute develops and commercializes innovative medical devices for the non-invasive diagnosis of diseases, with research focused on optical and magnetic resonance imaging and spectroscopy, device prototyping, bioinformatics, and medical software. Areas of research include infectious diseases research; assessment and management of strokes and cardiovascular disease; cancer detection, monitoring, and prognosis; heart and brain protection during heart surgery; assessment of burns and wound healing; and, development of non-invasive medical instruments. The NRC-IBD synergistic approach attracts medical researchers and business partners from across the country and around the world.

TRLabs creates innovative technologies and trains students to enhance ICT expertise and improve Canada's global competitiveness. Labs in Edmonton, Calgary, Saskatoon, Regina, and Winnipeg employ 250. With 50 partner members representing a unique synergy of industry, government, and university, research activities focus on seven strategic areas dedicated to building the network of the future: data networking, digital media, home technologies, network access, network systems, photonics, and wireless communications. In its 20-year existence, TRLabs has trained 810 highly skilled university graduates, created 290 technologies adopted for use by companies, and generated 157 patents issued or filed.
